Answers

A1. How can I clean the soap scum off my shower doors?

There are many commercial bathroom scum cleaners available. Some are, of course, better than others. The trick is to give the cleaner time to dissolve the scum. If scum is severe, then it may require repeat efforts to remove all the scum. Commercial cleaners tend to be expensive. A less expensive cleaning method is to heat some white vinegar and wipe it on the scummy surface. Then, take baking soda and clean the surface as you would with a powdered cleanser. Severe scum build-ups will more than likely require repeated efforts no matter what cleaner is used.
To minimize scum problems, wiping with chamois or squeegee after each use is recommended. The water droplets that remain on surfaces leave mineral deposits that form little ledges that collect more mineral deposits and scum each time the shower is used. Switching to liquid shower gel will also help eliminate scum problems.

Tip: Squeegee showers daily and wipe down showers weekly.

Caution: Don't use vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners containing acids on marble, limestone, and travertine or onyx surfaces.

A2. After the tiles had dried there was in places some white powder on the tiles, what is the best method of removing this?
The white powder or haze is a grout film which on the surface of the tiles after the grout is dry, the simplest way to clean this off is to use a clean dry cloth and polish the tiles over before the first shower.

A3. I recently replaced the silver or steel bathroom tap fittings and they are badly stained already and I am not sure how to clean it without making it worse. Regular mild soap does not work and neither does Windex, etc. What can I use to clean the fixtures?
Assuming you are dealing with stains on tapware, flanges or a bath spout. If these are not wiped dry after each use, they are prone to mineral deposits and discoloration. Hard water and harsh cleaners can take a toll on finish. Chrome coating on plastic tapware tends not to last very long. Chrome on brass or other metal tends to be more durable but will succumb to harsh cleaners and hard water minerals, too. Placing a paper towel saturated with white vinegar on affected areas can soak off mineral deposits. Repeat applications will be necessary. If the tapware has a lacquer coating and water and minerals have entered beneath lacquer, then lacquer would have to be removed, metal polished, and lacquer reapplied.

A4. What chemicals can I use to clean the tiles now they have been sealed?
There are many excellent household cleaners on the market today. They should all do a good job for you, so use your favourite. Remember, read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and recommended usage. They will perform as promised, if you use them as directed.
Tip: Before cleaning bathroom tiles, run the shower on hot for five minutes to steam the dirt loose

Do's and Don't of Ceramic Tile Care

Do not combine ammonia and household beaches.

Do not use harsh cleaning agents (such as steel wool pads), which can scratch or damage the surface of your tile.

Do not use a cleaning agent that contains colour on unglazed tile. It has a relatively porous body and may absorb the colour.

Do test scouring powders in a small area before using on tile.

Do use silicone sealer on grout joints if continuous staining is a problem.

Do read and follow label directions for all cleaners.

Do contact us for advise on special cleaning problems or if you have any questions.

A5. How often should we seal the marble in our shower?
This will vary depending on hardness and texture of surface, type of area, surface wear, frequency and type of maintenance products used. Expected wear is up to 15 years. Conditions, harsh cleaning methods and high-alkaline, acidic or solvent-based cleaners will affect wear. As a result may require more frequent re-applications.

We recommend using a cleaner specially formulated for natural stone. General purpose cleaning products can damage natural stone or the sealer applied, so don't just pick anything off of the shelf at the grocery store. Improperly formulated cleaners or those with acids (such as porcelain or tile cleaners) may etch the surface of the stone. Make sure that you select a cleaner specially formulated for natural stone care.

Tip: Periodically test the sealer for absorption. If any is detected re-apply.

Test: Make sure surface area is clean, dry and free of waxes and coatings. Apply a drop of water at least 1-inch in diameter to the face of the stone and let stand for at least 15 minutes. If surface is unsealed, the water will absorb into the stone and darken the surface (absorption speed will depend on porosity of the stone). If surface is already sealed or if stone is very dense, the water will bead up and stand on the surface. If you're unsure please contact our Contact Support Representative.

A6. Our painter arrived to paint the affected wall and said it is still wet. How long should we wait before painting?
If you have a sheeted stud wall, drying time may vary from 7 to 30 days. A rendered brick wall may vary from 15 to 60 days depending on the source of the moisture penetration and the size of the affected area.

A8. How can I restore a scratched and dull bath?
Use an automotive polishing compound applied with a clean cotton rag. Follow with a light coat of liquid wax; buff to shine. Deep scratches, should they occur, require professional restoration.

A9. Can you suggest a way to clean a dirty and blocked shower head?
You can easily remove the hard-water and mineral deposits that build up in a showerhead using warm vinegar in a plastic bag:

1. Pour warm vinegar into a small plastic bag.

2. Attach the filled bag to the showerhead using a rubber band.

3. Soak the showerhead for an hour.

4. Remove and discard the vinegar.

5. Remove the loosened deposits with a toothbrush.

6. Clean the spray holes in the showerhead with a toothpick.

7. Run warm water through the showerhead for several minutes.

A10. My shower curtain really needs a good cleaning. I just can't see spending hours scrubbing it down. Do you have an easy trick to getting them clean without all the elbow grease?
Yes there is an easy way to clean them. Most shower curtains can be machine washed even the plastic ones. Put them in the washer with a few bath towels. The towels will help scrub the curtains. Just do not overfill the basket or nothing will come clean. Add your laundry soap as the washer begins to fill, then add the towels and allow it to finish filling. Shut off the machine and let the curtains soak for an hour to help loosen the soap residue. Finish laundering and air dry.
